Strategy for GRE Verbal Section

1. Learn the Barron’s High Frequency Words and Kaplan’s Top GRE word lists. You will find most of the words coming in GRE test from these two lists
2. In GRE sentence completion try to guess the answer before you look at the options, this will help you to find the right answer easily
3. In GRE sentence completion try to fit all answers in the blank and choose the one which fits the best
4. Be careful of words like ‘non’, ‘un’. Use transition words like ‘similarly’, ‘likewise’ to choose the right answer
5. In GRE sentence completion, for question with two blanks, if one word of an answer does not make sense ignore that option
6. For GRE analogies questions learn common analogies. Also beware of obvious answers, they are mostly not the right answer
7. For GRE antonyms be careful about the alternate meaning of the word. GRE loves to give you questions where alternate meaning is used. 8. For antonyms try to guess the opposite of the word in capitals before you look at answer options
9. In reading comprehension pay special attention to first and last lines of the paragraph. Mostly questions will be somehow related to these.
10. In reading comprehension just base your answers on what is given in the passage. Don’t use your knowledge to answer the questions

General strategy for GRE

2. Familiarize yourself with directions for each section of GRE. This will save the time during the exam since you will be given no extra time for reading directions.
3. Be sure of your answers. In GRE computer adaptive exam you cannot go back and change your answers once you have submitted them.
4. Make guesses if you don’t know the correct answer. Before making a guess eliminate the obviously wrong options then choose from the left answer options.
5. Devote more time to the questions in the beginning of each section. Since GRE is computer adaptive, if you get the questions in the beginning wrong you will get easier questions subsequently which are low scoring. This will decrease your overall GRE score. You HAVE to get the first 5 questions correct in each section of GRE
6. As per ETS, the people who conduct GRE, “Time Management is the key”. Your timing skills can increase or decrease your score by 100 points.
