How should engineering freshers give interviews for IT jobs?
View Comments
A large chunk of engineering freshers end up taking jobs in IT sector. Their dream jobs are with companies like Infosys, TCS, HCL, Tech Mahindra and the likes. However, not many of these freshers know what is expected from them in the interviews. Here it is:Step 1:
Do not be nervous. The interviewers are there just to judge your suitability for the opening which they have. If they find you to be a good fit, you are selected. On the other hand if you are not selected it does not mean that you are not a good student or smart enough, it is just that you and the job requirements do not match. It is that simple.
Step 2:
Read about the company. Interviewers like it when you speak something intelligent about the company which they do not expect to hear from a fresh engineer. Example of such intelligent things can be – Infosys stock went from 1330 to 1500 when its results were declared this quarter OR Infosys recently won British Telecom as a customer. It is up to you how you fit whatever you know about the company into your answer.
Step 3:
Give relevant answers. Lot of freshers just start speaking without giving a thought to the question as soon as the question is asked. It is OK if you ask the interviewer politely for 2-3 minutes to think before you answer. Against popular belief, it does not reflect badly on you; instead, interviewers see it in a very positive light that the guy is thinking and answering rather than giving answers learnt by heart
Step 4:
Show your approach in problem solving. Almost all IT companies ask puzzles. If you are asked a puzzle in the interview, clearly work out all the steps since this is what they want to see. Yes, the end answer is not their primary interest; they want to see how you think. So be very clear in the way you approach a problem and have a logical explanation for each step.
Step 5:
Ask a question. When the interviewer asks you for any question that you might have, don’t say ‘I don’t have anything to ask’. Now you are about to join your first job, you have never worked in corporate setup, you have never earned money before, you are going into a completely new world and you don’t have any question! This cannot be. Ask about anything related to the company or the job. Some questions to ask can be- What do you (interviewer) like about working with Infosys? What is the career growth path for software engineer at Infosys?
